If your dog suddenly has a very painful abdomen this an emergency situation and you should see your veterinarian right away. Some signs of a painful abdomen in the dog include whining, crying, retching, and vomiting.

The dog will also be extremely restless and won't be able to find a comfortable position to lay down. You may even see grunting or labored breathing as well. Even just simply pressing on the dog's abdomen would result in extreme pain for them.

One of the most common positions the dog assumes when they have a painful abdomen is what's called the "prayer position." This is where their chest is on the floor but there but is in the air. They do this position to try and relieve pressure on the abdomen.

All of these conditions listed are emergency situations that must be dealt with right away. Your dog cannot wait until the next day to see the veterinarian. That's why it's always good to have your emergency veterinary phone number listed someplace where you can easily see it.

Since many different conditions can cause a hurting abdomen in your dog the treatment your veterinarian will give will be quite varied.
